On the second try, McGillivary took the lead while Steve Ballenger shot into second coming out of turn two and quickly took the lead. Henderson moved into fourth after three laps with Sammy working to catch him. Vandenberg spun in turn four on the next lap to bring out the caution, which negated Sammy's pass of Henderson. The order when the green came out again was Ballenger-McGillivray-Hansen-Henderson-Swindell-Dewall-Smith-Vandenberg. John "Jet" Miller took the lead with Bell in tow as a charging Alley took third place coming out of turn four on the first lap. On the next lap, Alley hit the inside berm going into turn three which he recovered from, but it cost him his momentum and he was not able to take second place from Bell until a lap later coming out of turn two, with Bakker moving into third with five to go. When the board read four laps left, Alley was able to get under Miller in turn one to take the point, as Bakker moved into second place with two laps left. Miller made a great charge and nearly took second back from Bakker in turn four going for the checkers.

Peters took the lead from Drost high out of turn four on the first lap when Moore blew a rear tire and spun on the front stretch, retiring with steering problems. Lambertz held off Dobmeier and Kevin Swindell to hold onto third, passing Drost for second in turn two with three laps down. With five laps to go, Meyer tries to get underneath a low running Swindell going into turn three and rubs Swindells left rear with his right front, ending with Meyer spinning between turns three and four, bringing out the yellow flag. Meyer was pushed off and tagged the tail. On the restart, Peters charged off with the lead until the red flag came out for Meyer, who had once again tried to get under Swindell who was running in the middle going into turn three and again hit Swindell's left rear with his right front tire resulting in Meyer flipping high up in turn three. When racing resumed, Dobmeier was aiming to take second from Lambertz but fell short. As the checkers flew, Kevin Swindell clipped the bottom berm in turn four, but recovered to hold his position.

The $8,000 to win 2005 edition of the Huset's Gold Cup was ran under beautiful skies and a harvest moon on August 20th at Brandon. The caution flag came out on the first lap when Tim St. Arnold spun on the back stretch on the green flag lap to set up a complete restart with St. Arnold tagging the tail. With one lap in, the yellow came out for the final time for debris on the track. As racing resumed, Meyer pulled away and had a straightaway lead over Bakker after two laps counted. Moore pulled into the pits after four laps as Henderson moved into fifth out of turn two on the next lap. With twenty two laps to go Meyer reached the backmarkers and Peters passed Dobmeier for third while Sammy and Henderson battled for fifth, Sammy taking the position on lap fourteen. Alley started his charge to the front taking fourth from Dobmeier on lap twentyone going down the back straight as Vandenberg pulled into the pits with a smoking engine. By now the top half of the track had taken a blue shine, Kevin Swindell passed Bakker for second place out of turn four with four laps to go, closing the gap on Meyer to four car lengths at the checkers.

With one lap to go, the power steering went out on Rosenboom's car as he entered turn one full bore, jumping the cushion and hitting the wall hard and rolling, bringing out the red. He was okay. Ballenger took the point at the green and didn't look back. The caution came out one lap in as Doug Martens car came to a stop at the top of turn four. When racing resumed, Ballenger again took off, going high in the corners and pushing the cushion in turn four up a good three feet by the time the checkered flags flew. Droescher gave Ballenger a good run for his money early on.
A Feature (18 laps): 1. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (13); 2. Micah Schliemann, Hartford (12); 3. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn. (2); 4. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (3); 5. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (6); 17. Steve Ballenger, Harrisburg (16); 18. Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, Iowa (8).
As the green flag flew, Drost took the lead with Peterson in tow. The caution flag came out with two laps in for Dobesh who spun in the first corner; Steve Ballenger retired to the pits, as did Rosenboom a lap earlier with steering problems. As racing resumed, Drost took his sprinter to the top while Reilly passed Peterson for second place running low in turn four, with Peterson getting past Reilly two laps later coming out of turn two with 12 laps left on the scoreboard. Five laps later, Peterson jumped the rapidly shrinking cushion in turn four and hits the wall, coming to a stop and going to the pits. He was done for the evening. The running order with seven laps to go was Drost-Reilly-Wasmund-Hanssen-Dusty Ballenger-Schliemann-Hansen-Rokusek-Bickett-Jacobsma-Runge-Martens. Butch Hanssen went on a tear on the rim when the green flew once again, passing Wasmund and then Reilly in one lap to take second and set his sights on the huggy pole running Drost, making his pass for the lead out of turn four with fourteen to go. One lap later Jacobsma came to a stop on the back straight to bring out the yellow flag and a green-white-checkered finish. Hanssen retained his front runner position as Schliemann used the restart as an opportunity to close the gap between him and Drost, taking second out of turn four coming for the white flag.

The yellow came out for McDonald with three laps down, who had spun out. As racing resumed Henderson took third from DeWall on the next lap. Dobmeier was finding his hot spots to pass DeWall and Henderson as Spurlock pulled into the pits with sixteen laps to go. Two laps later Jeffrey was into lapped traffic and Meyer was making his charge to the front, challenging Henderson and moving into third place on lap eighteen. Some tight racing ensued between these two as Meyer jumped the cushion in turn two three laps later which allowed Henderson to get back past him. Schliemann had moved up to fourth before the yellow came out for Peters who had made contact with another car in the fourth corner. Jake Peters had his Weseman 410 cranked for this one, shooting off to a big lead at the green as Meyer was moving up to third from tenth on lap five, taking second on the next lap. Dobmeier was also on the move putting his car into eleventh place after eleven laps when the yellow came out for Hansen who spun in turn four. The top three at this point was 57-1w-12L. On the next lap McDonald and Steve Ballenger tangled coming out of turn four, both retiring for the night as Riedel also pulled into the pits. Peters once again took control of the race, getting into lapped cars with five laps left on the board.
NMRA 360 Sprints Heat #1: 1. Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls (2); 2. Terry Reilly, Watertown (6); 3. Cody Hansen, Nunda (3); 4. Donovan Peterson, Bruce (7); 5. Brandon Rokusek, Geddes (4); 6. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (5); 7. Justin Jacobsma, Hull, Iowa (1); 8. Ryan Bickett, Ramona (8).
Runge tore off with this one as Reilly put the 69R into third place in the first lap, and into second on the next. Cody Hansen ran one of his strongest races at Huset's when he put his car into third place with five laps down when he passed Peterson for third out of turn four and then put pressure on Reilly for second.

Martens got a great start at the green and was leading Rosenboom by ten car lengths with two laps scored. Butch was pushing for third but couldn't get past Vonk.
Heat #3: 1. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn. (2); 2. Dusty Ballenger, Harrisburg (5); 3. Micah Schliemann, Hartford (7); 4. Casey Abbas, Parker (1); 5. Eric McGillivray, Canton (3); 6. Scott Winters, Butterfield, Minn. (8); 7. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (6); 8. Troy Vink, Tea (4).
Abbas and Drost were even going into turn one at the green with Drost pulling away coming out of turn two. Dusty Ballenger passed Abbas out for turn four on lap two, securing second place while Micah came up to challenge the rim riding Abbas, taking third.
B Feature: 1. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (1); 2. Scott Winters, Butterfield, Minn. (3); 3. Bradley Nelson, Brookings (2); 4. Lyle Howey III, Brookings (5); 5. Justin Jacobsma, Hull, Iowa (4); 6. Terry Chester, Parker (8); 7.Ryan Bickett, Ramona (7); 8. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (6); DNF: 9. Troy Vink, Tea (9).
Wasmund capitalized on his pole position starting spot and ran away with it as Nelson and Winters put on one of the most entertaining battles of the evening, with Nelson locked down on the bottom and Winters pulling alongside him innumerable times while riding the rim, with Winters finally making his pass stick on the front straight with three laps left to go which was called back for a stalled Bickett in turn two. Two green-white-checkered finishes were set up, the first saw the yellow fly for a spinning Flowers in turn four. On the last try Winters got past Nelson in turn two for second.
A Feature: 1. Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, Iowa (4); 2. Terry Reilly, Watertown (9); 3. Casey Abbas, Parker (2); 4. Donovan Peterson, Bruce (5); 5. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (6); 6. Micah Schliemann, Hartford (13); 7. Dusty Ballenger, Harrisburg (17); 8. Randy Droescher, Larchwood, Iowa (8); 9. Scott Winters, Butterfield, Minn. (15); 10. Brandon Rokusek, Geddes (3); 11. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (11); 12. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn. (18); 13. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (19); 14. Bradley Nelson, Brookings (16); 15. Cody Hansen, Nunda (12); 16. Jordan Martens, Harrisburg (10); 17. Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls (7); 18. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (14); 19. Eric McGillivray, Canton (1).
As the green flag was waved, McGillivray charged into turn one with the lead with Rosenboom and Abbas hot on his tail. These three were able to pull away from the pack and put a straightaway lead between them with Rosenboom on the bottom making stabs at first place and Abbas once again on the rim staying within striking distance. On lap ten Rosenboom was able to take the lead from a still fast McGillivary who was cruising the cushion, whereupon one lap later something broke in McGillivary's suspension, pulling him into the turn one marbles and wall, coming to a stop and riding the hook to the pits. As the yellow flew, the order was 6-17v-10-69R-42w-21v-24-28-2D-9-27-R19 in the top 12. One lap into the restart, second place Abbas jumped the cushion between turns one and two, allowing Peterson and Reilly to briefly pull ahead of him, but Casey was able to regain control and shot back past both of them on the back straight to retain second place. This set up a great battle between Abbas and Reilly who managed to close the gap on Rosenboom despite the close racing between them. On the white flag lap, Reilly gets underneath Abbas in turn three to snatch second place by a wheel at the checkers!
Thanks to Todd Hoffman of Huset's for the finishing orders. Edited as per my own notes.

NMRA 360 Sprints
Heat #1: 1. Terry Reilly, Watertown (5); 2. Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls (3); 3. Daryl Reverts, Humboldt (1); 4. Brandon Rokusek, Geddes (2); 5. Dusty Ballenger, Harrisburg (6); 6. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (4); 7. Bradley Nelson, Brookings (7).
Terry Reilly had his Butler Built 69R in fine form, moving into second place by lap two and passing Reverts for the lead out of turn four a half a lap later.
Heat #2: 1. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn. (2); 2. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (3); 3. Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, Iowa (5); 4. Justin Jacobsma, Hull, Iowa (1); 5. Casey Abbas, Parker (4); 6. Jordan Martens, Harrisburg (6).
Drost powered away from the field at the green and took it to the top with Hanssen in tow, leaving Jacobsma, Rosenboom and Abbas running three wide out of turn two in their bids to make the transfer. You could have thrown a blanket over those three for most of the race.
Heat #3: 1. Ryan Bickett, Ramona (4); 2. John Kaiser, Lake Norden (1); 3. Bryan Dobesh, Sioux Falls (6); 4. Troy Vink, Tea (2); 5. Lyle Howey III, Brookings (5); 6. Randy Droescher, Larchwood, Iowa (3).
Misfortune struck at the green, as Vink got loose between turns one and two at the green, bumping Droescher, spinning him which collected Howey. Vink was able to return to the back of the field while Droescher and Howey rode the hook into the pits with front end damage. The remaining four cars made the field for a complete restart that saw Kaiser take the lead at the green until Bickett blew past him high out of turn four with one lap down.
Heat #4: 1. Micah Schliemann, Hartford (3); 2. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (6); 3. Shawn VanWyhe, Rock Rapids, Iowa (5); 4. Cody Hansen, Nunda (4); 5. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (2); 6. Doug Martens, Ward (1).
Micah got past Martens on the back stretch on the first lap to take the point, as VanWyhe quickly moved into second place. With two laps down, Wasmund passed VanWyhe and Martens for second high out of turn two. The last lap saw Wasmund make a challenge for first, running side by side with Schliemann in turn one.
B Feature(8 laps) two transfer: 1. Dusty Ballenger, Harrisburg (1); 2. Casey Abbas, Parker (2); 3. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (4); 4. Jordan Martens, Harrisburg (5); 5. Doug Martens, Ward (6); 6. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (3); 7. Bradley Nelson, Brookings (7); 8. Lyle Howey III, Brookings (8); 9. Randy Droescher, Larchwood, Iowa (9).
Ballenger took charge of with this one as Abbas made a smooth start to nail down second place. Ballenger was able to put a straightaway lead on Abbas, who in turn led Vonk by a straight as both he and Ballenger rode the rim.
A Feature(18 laps): 1. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn. (5); 2. Micah Schliemann, Hartford (11); 3. Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, Iowa (15); 4. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (7); 5. Terry Reilly, Watertown (14); 6. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (10); 7. Dusty Ballenger, Harrisburg (17); 8. Ryan Bickett, Ramona (12); 9. Cody Hansen, Nunda (13); 10. John Kaiser, Lake Norden (3); 11. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (19); 12. Daryl Reverts, Humboldt (1); 13. Casey Abbas, Parker (18); 14. Justin Jacobsma, Hull, Iowa (2); 15. Shawn VanWyhe, Rock Rapids, Iowa (16); 16. Brandon Rokusek, Geddes (4); 17. Troy Vink, Tea (8); 18. Bryan Dobesh, Sioux Falls (5); 19. Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls (9).
Reverts spun in the first corner while leading from the green and nearly collected Reilly, who came to a stop in time to avoid damage. Both cars would go to the rear of the field for the restart, putting Kaiser on the pole as the whole inside line up moved up a row. Kaiser used this to his advantage, taking the lead while Drost and Wasmund were on the move, with Drost passing Kaiser high out of turn four with two laps down. Drost immediately put a straightaway lead on the rest of the pack with Wasmund running in second. Schliemann was quickly moving through the field from his 11th starting spot, closing the gap on Wasmund until he bumped the wall, losing his momentum on lap seven. He would not be able to challenge Wasmund again until lap eleven when he made his pass of Wasmund for second place. Once again, Rosenboom was able to quietly move to the front, taking third place from Wasmund after starting 15th. With four laps to go Schliemann passed Drost coming out of turn two, which was called back as the yellow flew for the stalling car of Mitch Runge in turn four.
When the green flew once again, Drost headed to the top of the track with Schliemann in tow. Drost gave the crowd a thrill as he jumped the curb in turn one, bumping the wall, but was able to recover and hold on to first place. With two laps left in the race, Dobesh flipped in turn two, bringing out the red flag and setting up a green-white-checker finish. Schliemann was not ready to concede defeat just yet, as Drost went back to riding the rim while Schliemann was hitting his hot spots, setting up perfect slide jobs coming out of turn four and getting some side by side action. Drost was able to keep his car on the cushion and power away from Schliemann out of turn four on both laps for a very exciting finish.
NMRA Supermodifieds A Feature(8 laps): 1. Gary Zitterich (1); 2. Mike Koepke (3); 3. Danny Harmon (2); 4. Ty Hanton (4).
Denny Harmon took off with the lead and headed to the top of the track at the green while Hanten, Koepke and Zitterich ran the lower parts of the track. Zitterich had his Vicky Coupe into second place with two laps in as he passed Hanten's ducktail coupe for position coming out of turn two after some minor contact. On the next lap, Harmon got sideways in turn one and and nearly T-boned by Koepke, who was able to get on the brakes fast enough to come to a stop, which brought out the yellow flag. A dash to the checkers ensued with Zitterich crossing the line first.

The first attempt at green went awry when Hansen did a 360 and kept it going bringing out a yellow. He was given his time spot back. Moore led lap one, before Zomer took command and to the high side of the raceway in the 25 lapper. Meyer was quickly moving through the pack and shot around Zomer who had gone low in lapped traffic on lap 12. Zomer came right back and shot by Meyer to lead lap 13, splitting two lapped cars to extend his advantage. Four laps later, Zomer smacked the front stretch wall, slowed and gave the point back to Meyer. On lap 18, Hansen and Cressman contacted on the front stretch. The leader struck Cressman putting a small puncture in his right rear, but not enough to replace. Hansen retired. The restart saw Meyer leading Zomer, Henderson, Alley, and Moore with seven to go. Meyer shot out again and he and Zomer were approaching lapped traffic again on lap 22, when Garner came up the track, contacted Vanderploeg and sent the 7x flipping down the front stretch. Both were done for the night. Meyer led Zomer, Henderson, Alley and Moore back to green flag racing. Schliemann was sixth and made the most moves in the last three laps, getting by Moore and then Henderson on the last lap to take fourth. Alley and Swenson shared hard-charger honors, finishing nine spots ahead of their starting positions.
360s Heat one (started): 1. Terry Reilly 69R (3) 2. Doug Martens 51 (2) 3. Cody Hansen 4 (5) 4. Mitch Runge 28 (4) 5. Casey Abbas 17v (6) / 6. Lyle Howey III 55 (7) 7. Justin Jacobsma 10 (8) 8. Daryl Reverts 7 (1)
Eight lap heats transferred the top five to the feature. Reilly shot around the front row and dominated flag to flag. Reverts front wing came dislodged at the halfway point while he was running second. He pulled off with two to go. That allowed Abbas to grab the final transfer, which he earned after passing Howey on the last lap.
Heat two (started): 1. Shawn Van Wyhe 99 (2) 2. Jesse Drost 27 (3) 3. Dusty Ballenger 2D (5) 4. Brandon Rokusek 42w (1) 5. Brent Vonk 21v (6) / 6. Troy Vink 77 (4) 7. Kevin Engle 2 (8) 8. John Kaiser 21x (7)
Van Wyhe led flag to flag. Ballenger looked storng on the high side in moving up. Vonk passed Vink on the final lap for the final transfer to the A.
Heat three (started): 1. Jordan Martens 13 (1) 2. Butch Hanssen 8K (3) 3. Micah Schliemann 9 (5) 4. Randy Droescher 24 (4) 5. Jody Rosenboom 6 (6) / 6. Kevin Flowers 42 (2) 7. Ryan Bickett 17B (7) 8. Brad Nelson 47 (8)
J. Martens led throughout and appeared to have the win, when his top wing collapsed on him in turn four coming to the checkers. He stayed on the gas and held on over Hanssen, despite clipping the inside guardrail. The best race on the track was for the final transfer with Rosenboom getting by Flowers.
B main (started): 1. Howey (1) 2. Bickett (6) 3. Jacobsma (4) / 4. Vink (2) 5. Flowers (3) 6. Nelson (8) 7. Engle (5) 8. Kaiser (7) 9. Reverts (9)
Howey led throughout and won by nearly half a lap. Engle brought out the only caution with a lap two spin. Bickett moved up nicely winning a battle with Jacobsma for second with two to go.
A main (started): 1. J. Martens (2) 2. Ballenger (11) 3. Reilly (5) 4. Hanssen (7) 5. Schliemann (12) 6. Van Wyhe (4) 7. Runge (8) 8. Abbas (13) 9. Rosenboom (15) 10. Rokusek (1) 11. Droescher (9) 12. Hansen (10) 13. Vonk (14) 14. Howey (16) 15. Bickett (17) 16. Jacobsma (18) 17. D. Martens (3) 18. Drost (6)
Rokusek took the early lead with J. Martens in tow in the 18 lapper. J. Martens made a pass for the point on lap three and despite late contact with the wall, the 17 year old held on to his first career Husets win over a persistent Ballenger who patiently worked around Reilly for second, earning hard-charger honors. Drost made heavy contact with the wall on lap four and was done for the night. D. Martens was running third on lap seven when he retired. Spins on lap two and then lap eight sidelined Jacobsma.

This race had a complete restart as on the first lap, Jeffrey got loose coming out of turn four and made contact with Logan, Jeffrey bouncing off the outside front straight wall, flipping while Logan came to a stop just past the flagstand with his nose pointed to the infield. Both Jeffrey and Logan were ok, but the cars rode the hook into the pits. They tried to put a new front end on Jeffrey's car in the "work area" during the red but ran out of time. The complete restart saw Zomer storm off with the lead as Henderson moved into second and gave chase with Cressman and Bakker in tow on the rim. With 16 laps to go, McGillivray's sprinter appeared to lose power in turn three, coasting down the front straight to the first corner pit enterance, bringing out the yellow flag. The line up order now is 1z, 33, 56, 4, 11x, 57x, 7x, 16, 1w and 13 in the top ten. As racing resumed, Bakker shot past Hansen low in turn two as the field again spread out until four laps later, when Garner and Dump made contact coming out of turn four which saw Dump hitting the outside front wall and flipping. Also collected in this incident was Moore who was sent to the tail with no damage. Garner went to the "work area" for some repairs and returned to the tail minus his nose wing. When the green flag flew, Henderson and Bakker exchanged spots for a few laps, with Bakker finally holding on to second place as Zomer continued to lead by five or more car lengths. On lap twentyone, Cressman jumped the curb riding the rim between one and two, hitting the wall, flipping and rolling hard. Cressman was ok, but the black Ford was done for the night. When the green flew for the final four laps, Dewall's sprinter coughed a puff of smoke and lost power in turn one and pulled into the pits. Once again, when Doug Clark's green flag waved in the air, Zomer charged off with the lead as Henderson got past Bakker for second, who took the spot back on the same lap.

Heat #2: 1. Donovan Peterson 10, Bruce (2); 2. Troy Vink 77, Tea (1); 3. Brent Vonk 21v, Sioux Falls (4); 4. Dusty Ballenger 2D, Harrisburg (6); 5. Micah Schliemann 9, Hartford (7);/ 6. Bryan Dobesh 2, Sioux Falls (3); 7. Dusty Wasmund 3L, Sioux Falls (5).
Donovan took advantage of the fast track at the green and was gone, leaving Vink and Vonk (no pun intended) to battle for second in this strung out heat.
Heat #3: 1. Jordan Martens 13, Harrisburg (2); 2. Randy Droescher 24, Larchwood, Iowa (4); 3. Casey Abbas 17v, Parker (6); 4. Jesse Drost 27, Worthington, Minn. (5); 5. Cody Hansen 4, Nunda (3);/ 6. Daryl Reverts 7, Humboldt (7); 7. Brandon Rokusek 42w, Geddes (1).
Jordan Martens stood on the loud pedal to take the lead in this heat, while Droescher made his move early to take second place. Abbas found his speed at the halfway point to move up three positions.
B Feature 6 laps(top three transfer): 1. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (1); 2. Bryan Dobesh, Sioux Falls (2); 3. Dusty Wasmund, Sioux Falls (5);/ 4. Mitch Runge, Sioux Falls (4); 5. Doug Martens, Ward (7); 6. Daryl Reverts, Humboldt (3); 7. Brandon Rokusek, Geddes (6).
Butch was gone at the green and Wasmund made his moves early to secure a transfer spot. Runge was a close fourth.
A Feature: 1. Lyle Howey III, Brookings (3); 2. Kevin Flowers, Hartford (1); 3. Cody Hansen, Nunda (7); 4. Brent Vonk, Sioux Falls (8); 5. Jody Rosenboom, Rock Rapids, Iowa (10); 6. Terry Reilly, Watertown (12). DNF: 18. Butch Hanssen, Sioux Falls (16); 19. Jesse Drost, Worthington, Minn.(11).
Howey was able to wrestle to the lead coming out of turn two with the biggest battles happening in places two through five as Flowers held on to second while Hansen, Vonk and Rosenboom seemed to sneak to the front running the bottom while eyes were glued to the rim riders in this fast race. This has to have been one of the most frenzied races I have witnessed at Huset's. Or it could have been the excitement of the new racing season. It is hard to tell.

Logan jumped to the lead at Doug's green with Dobmeier and Zomer giving chase. The top three got strung out at 10 car length intervals running the high and middle grooves on a very smooth Huset's track. With 3 laps to go, Dobmeier starts smoking and pulls in, one lap later Zomer lost his engine going into turn 1 bringing out the yellow, they would pack it up and leave at the intermission. Some close racing ensued on the green-white-checker finish between Logan and IRA visitor Kertscher.
Heat #2: 1) 11x Gregg Bakker, Sioux Falls (1); 2) 1w Chad Meyer, Sioux Falls (2); 3) 57x Jake Peters, Sioux Falls (3); 4) 24 Terry McCarl, Altoona, Iowa (8); 5) 9 Micah Schliemann, Hartford (5); 6) 16 Gary Dewall, Jackson, Minn. (8); 8) 05 Bill Boles, Harris, Iowa (7).
Kenny Hansen seized on his front row starting spot and ran off with the lead in a heat where the top half of turns one and two started to take a distinctive shine early in the race. This was an entertaining heat, as the drivers had to find their fast spots, running high on one end and low to middle on the other.

They had originally announced that a C Feature would be run for the 410 sprints tonight. They took to the track but only four cars made it out, so they decided to run them all in the B. Brock Dump grabbed the early lead with Schliemann hot on his tail, passing for first out of turn 1with 2 laps down. With eight laps to go, Henderson passed Lambertz for fourth coming out of turn four. The top four stretched it out as Dobmeier seemed rejuvinated as he was able break into the top five after starting on the tail.

Chuck McGillivray lead the field into the first lap, when Cressman and Moore got together in turn four, bringing out the yellow flag. The were both done for the night. When the green flew again, McGillivray lead the first four laps until Jeffrey passed him for the lead. The leaders were into traffic early, giving way to a classic Huset's feature with many lapped cars between the top four and the rest. With 12 to go, Kertscher made contact with Henderson in turn one, brining out the red flag for Henderson's bent sprinter. This set things up for Bakker's and McCarl's march to the front, as Bakker quickly took care of Jeffrey and built a five car lead going into lapped traffic. McCarl made his pass for first on the front straight, winning by a nerf bar.

Bickett again showed the crowd he has a fast sprinter with the first three cars in the outside row running off with the lead with Dobesh having gotten past Runge when the green flew. Runge took second place from Dobesh with 15 laps to go and the chase was on. The middle of the field was all waded up with Schliemann, Hanssen, Abbas, Ballenger and Drost all looking for daylight to make a pass through. With five laps left, Kaiser came to a stop on the track bringing out the yellow. At this point, the order was Bickett, Runge, Schliemann, Rokusek, Vink, Hanssen, Droescher and Abbas. There were so many passes going on when the green flew, sorry, I missed Michah's pass for first.
A Feature (Make-Up for May 30 ): 1) 40 Clint Garner(3); 2) 1w Chad Meyer(4); 3) 11x Greg Bakker(5) 4) 16 Gary DeWall(7) .
Garner jumped into the lead coming out of turn two on the green flag lap and was gone, holding the lead throughout the race. Schleimann was on the move and had his number 9 working fine until eleven laps to go when Mike Moore and Schliemann got together in turn one, both rolling and going to the pits. Bakker had moved into second place by then. Meyer passed Dobmeier for third when Dobmeier's engine started smoking and pulled over with four laps left in the make up feature from the rain shortened May 30th show.

Shirek took off with the lead, as by now the fast way around was to get to the top and ride the rim. Meyer moved in behind Shirek while Dusty made a three wide pass high out of turn four to take fourth place with four laps to go. On the next lap Meyer passed Shirek in turn one for a close race to the finish.
Heat 2: 1) 13 Mark Dobmeier(3); 2) 40 Clint Garner(4); 3) 25 Chad Radel(1); 4) 05 Bill Boles(5); 33 Jim Smith(2). DNF: 6) 11x Gregg Bakker(7); 7) 24 Terry McCarl(6).

Bakker was pushed into the pits and McCarl rode the hook. Radel again took the point at the green until Dobmeier passed him for first on lap six coming out of turn four. Three laps later, Garner got past Radel for second place.

Schliemann took the front row spot as Moore was unable to get out on track in time following his mishap in the make up race. An open track was all Schliemann needed to show that he was ready to race and rode the cushion to a heat win.
A Main: 1) Mark Dobmeier(7); 2) Micah Schliemann(8); 3) John Lambertz(5); 4) Gary Dewall(11).; 5) Clint Garner(10); 6) Chris Shirek(3).; 7) Chad Radel(2); 8) Jake Peters(19); 9) Gregg Bakker(17); 10) Chad Meyer(7); 11) Terry McCarl(22); 12) Dusty Ballenger(12); 13) Bill Boles(15); 14) Chuck McGillivray(6); 15) Ryan Voss(1); 16) Jim Smith(4); 17) Robert Bell(18); 18) Lynton Jeffrey(13); 19) Colin Northway(16); 20) Jordan Martens(7); 21) Mike Moore(20); 22) Marlon Jones(14).
The 22 car main event saw Radel grab the top from his outside front row starting position with Voss in tow. Schliemann quickly moved up five spots to take third place. With two laps in, Marlon Jones got on his side in turn one after tangling with Martens to bring out the red flag. Both were done for the evening. On the restart, Radel pulled away when Doug Clark tossed the green flag with Schliemann moving into second place, closing in on Radel in the first and second corners, but Radel was able to pull away coming out of two, putting four car lengths between them. This went on until five laps were in and the 24 car of McCarl came to a stop on the back straight, returning to tag the tail. As racing resumed, Schliemann and Radel kept up the same act, with Schliemann getting on Radel's rear nerf bar in one and two and Radel pulling away coming out. With eleven laps down, Moore came to a stop on the front straight to bring out the yellow flag and bunching up the field for another restart. Radel again pulled away by leading the field low into turn four and putting space between him and Micah, who continued to make strong challenges for the lead. The yellow flag flew once again on the seventeenth lap as Voss spun in turn two. The single file line up had the top cars in this order: Radel, Schliemann, Dobmeier, Lambertz, Jeffrey and Garner in the top six. As racing resumed, Dobmeier hit his stride, passing Schliemann and then Radel out of two with six laps left to go in the race. On the twentythird lap, Jeffrey made contact with the outside wall and knocked one whole side of his suspension out of whack and trying to make things work, blocking the late race comeback of Radel before coming to a stop jammed up on the front stretch infield fence. The "green-white-checker" finish did not see any change in position among the top 14 finishers.
Lewis / Pepsi/ Dr. Pepper 360 Sprints

Eric Lutz took advantage of the fast groove up on the rim to take the lead from Droescher coming out of turn four on the first lap. Droescher stayed in the hunt for the win running his low groove as Zomer was finding speed up top, taking second place with four laps to go and getting on Lutz's tail and giving the fans some fast tail to tail and side by side racing, Lutz settled down on the cushion coming out of turn four and held on for the win. Heat 3: 1) 21v Brent Vonk(3); 2) 99 Shawn VanWyhe(4); 3) 3D Dusty Ballenger(5); 4) 3 Steve Ballenger(7); 5) 69R Terry Reilly(6); 6) 17 Lee Goos Jr.(1); 7) 55 Lyle Howey III(2); 8) 14 Bill Fredin(8).
Goos took the early lead with Vonk passing him coming out of turn four on the first lap and the 21v was gone. VanWyhe put the 99 into second but Vonk was hot, putting a straightaway distance between him and VanWyhe for the win.
B Main: 1) Lee Goos Jr.(3); 2) Lyle Howey III(5); 3) Cody Hansen(1); 4) Troy Vink(2); 5) Bill Fredin(7); 6) Brandon Rokusek(6). DNF: 7) Eric McGillivray(8); 8) Brad Buysse(8). Rokusek spun in turn four, bringing out the yellow and bunching up the field, letting Howey III get on Hansen's tail and make a pass for the second spot. With four laps left on the board, McGillivray came to a stop on the back straight and retired for the evening.

Randy Droescher, having a good weekend since his heat win at the Master's Classic at Knoxville on Friday night, jumped out into the lead of the 360 sprint feature at the green and kept his sharp #24 in the hunt for the win all night despite getting passed by Martens with three laps down. Droescher once again took the point on lap six as Jody Rosenboom and Dusty Ballenger were on a tear up riding the rim until Ballenger jumped the cushion in turn four and broke his front axle bringing out the yellow with ten laps left in the race. With all the whiz-bang out of Rosenboom and Ballenger going on, Terry Reilly had "quietly" moved into 6th place behind Lutz. On the restart after the yellow, Droescher again held on to the lead until one lap later when Zomer got past him in the first turn. Rosenboom moved into second with a turn four pass of Droescher as Reilly eased his way into fourth place, passing Droescher for third on the twelveth lap. Rosenboom was runing down Zomer when his engine started smoking and came to a stop at the end of the front straight, going to the pits for a check up and returning to tag the tail. This set up a six lap dash with the order going Zomer, Reilly, Droescher, Lutz, Martens and Abbas in the top six. Reilly passed Zomer for first place going into turn three and stayed there, while Rosenboom was back in the race looking like a pro, moving up to eleventh place from the tail by the time the checkers flew.
Cheater's Day 2003 Huset's Speedway Brandon, SD 09_21_03 The 39th edition of the National Cheater's Day lived up to it's billing, with over 40 sprint cars in attendence. Wild body panels, air foils, air dams and side pods were found on the unlimited 360 c.i.d. sprinters that showed up for the "revenge redraw" formatted event, where the top two finishers in each heat participated in the unique method of setting up the top eight positions. Each driver drew a number out of a box, and then decided on who of the remaining seven top qualifiers got the starting position they drew. But before the top eight qualifiers could be determined, four heats were run.
The first heat saw Chuck McGillivray take off with the lead from outside front row when the red flew for Justin Saathof rolling down the front stretch out of turn four. After a yellow for Ryan Voss who was bouncing off the back straight wall, Shane Stewart got past McGillivray coming out of turn two when the green was waved. McGillivray was running a solid second place after briefly battling with Chad Meyer, when with one lap to go, something broke on the car and sent him slamming into the wall at the top of turns three and four. He was uninjured. This accident also snagged Terry Karn in the 1X car. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 4s Shane Stewart(6); 2) 1w Chad Meyer(3); 3) 1 Dusty Zomer(4); 4) 11 Troy Meyer(5); 5) 1H Donovan Peterson(12); 6) 46 Robert Danielson(9);
The second heat event Terry Reilly had the Haney 69H out to an early lead from pole position, while R19 Justin Henderson moved up to fifth place from tenth in the first to laps, passing Micah Schliemann for fourth coming out of turn four, completing the lap before the yellow was thrown seconds later for Mark Toews spin in turn two. The top five after three laps were Reilly, Martens, Henderson, Schliemann and Nelson. Reilly again took off with the point at the green, with Henderson passing Martens for second coming out of turn four on the restart lap. Marlon Jones, back racing in the Lutz 5 moved from the shot gun position to fifth, looking very sharp for not having much recent seat time. Finishing order (starting position): 1) 69H Terry Reilly(1); 2) R19 Justin Henderson(10); 3) 9 Michah Schliemann(4); 4) 51 Doug Martens(2); 5) 5 Marlon Jones(11); 6) 05 Bill Boles(9); 7) 47 Brad Nelson(5); 8) 2k Jimmy Kouba(6); 9) 75 Gordy Vogelaar(7); 10) 99 Shawn VanWyhe(8); 11) 5T Mark Toews(3).
Heat three had 2003 Huset's Season Champion Terry McCarl sitting in the outside front row position, which he took advantage of, taking the point as the green flew. Gregg Bakker had his #11x in second place and Randy Nygaard made a surprise return, in his front air dam, side pod/wing adorned #63 in third. Near midway, 17v Miles Grein hit the front stretch wall coming out of turn four, collecting Bickett and Swenson. All three cars went to the pits. The restart saw the sprinters getting strung out, with McCarl putting the distance between the rest of the field. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 24t Terry McCarl(2); 2) 11x Gregg Bakker(4); 3) 63 Randy Nygaard(6); 4) 4k Lynton Jeffrey(8); 5) 24 Randy Droescher(3); 6) 21v Brent Vonk(1); 7) 55 Lyle Howey III(10); 8) 42w Brandon Rokusek(11). DNF: 9) X Chuck Swenson(9); 10) 17b Ryan Bickett(5); 11) 17v Miles Grein(7).
Brock Dump ran a great race in heat four, leading from green to checkers. The only red flew when Dusty Ballenger put the #3 car hard into turn one. He was uninjured, and when the racing resumed, Dump held on to the lead while Jake Peters drove past the rest of the field to take second place. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 12 Brock Dump(1); 2) 57x Jake Peters(11); 3) 14R Randy Rosenboom(2); 4) 55 Clint Garner(10); 5) 13 Mark Dobmeier(8); 6) 25x Tom Platt(7); 7) 2 Steve Ballenger(9); 8) 78 Rob Caho(4); 9) 8c Chase Abbas(?); 10) 24m John Miller(6). DNF: 11) 3 Dusty Ballenger(5).
Nineteen sprints took to the track for the B Main, with the top 8 finishers moving up to the A. The eighteen lapper got underway with Marlon Jones jumping out to the lead from his outside front row position, with Brad Pake hot on his tail. A back stretch tangle between Jimmy Kouba and Tom Platt collected Ryan Voss and John Miller, sending them to the tail and Kouba and Platt to the pits. Two laps into the restart, Shawn VanWyhe flipped going into turn one, with Jones in the lead. On the next restart, Pake got past Jones on the back straight, but it was called back when Rob Caho brought out the yellow. When the green flew Pake passed Jones again coming out of turn two, this time it stuck. Mark Dobmeier had his #13 passing Jones two laps later, and in another two laps, Dobmeier passed Pake for first in turn two. The race looked to belong to Dobmeier, until 8 laps to go, he got loose at the top of turn two, came to a stop and brought out the yellow. After a check up and push off, Dobmeier tagged the tail. Top five with eight to go were: Pake, Jones, Boles, Ballenger and Vonk. While Ballenger and Boles were swapping positions between third and fourth, Dobmeier was charging to the front, reaching the last transfer spot of eighth place with three laps to go. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Pake(1); 2) Jones(2); 3) Steve Ballenger(12); 4) Boles(6); 5) Vonk(7); 6) Dobmeier(4); 7) Peterson(5); 8) Miller(18); 9) Droescher(3); 10) Howey III(11); 11) Abbas(17); 12) Voss(19); 13) Nelson(10); 14) Danielson(9). DNF: 15) Caho(15); 16) Rokusek(14); 17) VanWyhe(16); 18) Kouba(13); 19) Platt(8).
The twenty five lap 2003 Cheater's Day A Main got off to a great start as Brock Dump again started in the pole position and got the jump on fellow front row starter Jake Peters to take the lead at the green. Five laps in, Peters passed Dump for the lead as the race ran non-stop for 8 laps with Peters leading Dump, Reilly, Stewart and Henderson. On the eighth lap, a yellow flag quickly became a red when Miller and Peters made contact near turn one, with Peters catching Reilly and flipping. Miller would tag the tail while Peters and Reilly rode to the pits on the hook. With 17 laps to go, the order was Dump, Stewart, Henderson, Bakker and McCarl in the top five. Schlieman spun in turn one on the restart and was done for the night.
As race resumed, Henderson passed Stewart and Dump on the back straight after they both lost momentum sliding up in turn two to take the lead. Three laps later, with McCarl up to second place, Garner did a 360 in turn two and recovered, but the yellow flag had already flew, bunching up the field. Garner would stop on the front stretch under the yellow for a check up and tag the tail. With 14 to go, the order was Henderson, McCarl, Stewart, Dump and Bakker in the top five. With McCarl on hot on his tail, Henderson the track top to bottom, always pulling away coming out of the corners. Several times McCarl tried to pass under Henderson in turns three and four, but the R19 carried the momentum coming out and would jump out to a car length lead when hitting the straight. With seven laps to go, Donovan Peterson went to the pits after dropping some parts/debris near the top of turn three, bringing out the last yellow flag of the night. Henderson pulled away at the green, with McCarl challenging him for the lead in the corners; once into lapped traffic, Henderson was able to put a lapped car between him and McCarl at opportune moments to increase his lead in his run to $5,000 and the big trophy. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Henderson(4); 2) McCarl(7); 3) Stewart(8); 4) Bakker(6); 5) Chad Meyer(5); 6) Jeffrey(11); 7) Zomer(9); 8) Garner(14); 9) Boles(20); 10) Dobmeier(22); 11) Troy Meyer(13); 12) Pake(15); 13) Martens(16); 14) Rosenboom(10); 15) Miller(23); 16) Jones(18); 17) Vonk(19); 18) Steve Ballenger(17); 19) Dump(1). DNF: 20) Peterson(21); 21) Schliemann(12); 22) Reilly(3); 23) Peters(2); 24) Nygaard.
Huset's 2003 Sertoma Charity Race, Brandon, SD 9_01_03
This years 11th Annual Midtown Sertoma Charity Race was the final "regular" race of the season for the 360 sprints at Huset's Speedway. The Midtown Sertoma Club "raises thousands of dollars annually for children with speech and hearing difficulties and other children's charities in the Sioux Empire." It is also their major fundraiser of the year.
The first Lewis/Pepsi/DrPepper heat saw Shawn Vanwyhe take the lead at the checkers, while Joe Riedel settled into second place. Butch Hanssen and Dusty Ballenger were running side by side in their battle for third place, with Hanssen getting past Ballenger with three to go out of turn four. Dump dropped out after three laps. Finishing order(starting order): 1) 99 VanWyhe(2); 2) 11jr Riedel(4); 3) 8k Hanssen(3); 4) 3 Ballenger(6); 5) 42w Brandon Rokusek(1); 6) 47 Brad Nelson(7). DNF: 7) Brock Dump(5).
Ryan Bickett lead from green to checkers from his outside front row starting spot, quickly putting the distance between him and the pack to start heat two. Terry Reilly moved into second early in the heat, with Bickett maintaining a two car length lead as he and Reilly continued to pull away, taking the checkers with a straightaway lead on the third place car. Finishing Order(starting position): 1) 17b Bickett(2); 2) 69H Reilly(4); 3) 1 Dusty Zomer(5); 4) 21v Brent Vonk(3); 5) 77 Troy Vink(1); 6) 82 Brad Buysse(6). DNS: Danielson.
Heat three was another GWC non-stop heat, with Doug Martens finding the fast way around, never surrendering his lead as Troy Meyer gave chase. Micah Schliemann passed John Miller for third coming out of turn two with 3 laps to go. Finishing Order(starting position): 1) 51 Martens(1); 2) 17v Meyer(4); 3) 9 Schliemann(6); 4) 24m Miller(2); 5) 28 Mitch Runge(5); 6) 24 Randy Droescher(5); 7) 5w Dusty Wasmund(7).
The final race of the 2003 season at Huset's was a 20 lap "special" for the 360's, as Brandon Rokusek took off with the lead from the pole with Doug Martens close behind. Martens passed Rokusek for first coming out of turn two with two laps down and never looked back, and Shawn VanWyhe passed Troy Vink for third on the front straight. Hanssen moved past Bickett for fourth with 8 laps down and VanWyhe passed Rokusek for second in turn four on the next lap. Race leader Martens entered lapped traffic at the midway point and this became a big factor, as Hanssen passed VanWyhe with seven laps left for second place, and Reilly was right there to get on his bumper, passing him high in turn four to take third. Marten's engine started smoking heavily on the straights with five laps left on the scoreboard, flaming out at the flagstand as he took the checkered flags, he had nursed it for his first feature win of the season at Huset's. Hard charger goes to Micah Schliemann, who moved up to fifth from his fifteenth starting spot. Finishing order(staring position): 1) 51 Martens(3); 2) 8k Hanssen(7); 3) 69H Reilly(10); 4) VanWyhe(4); 5) 9 Schliemann(15); 6) 17b Bickett(5); 7) 21v Vonk(8); 8) 17v Meyer(11); 9) Rokusek(1); 10) 28 Runge(13); 11) 1 Zomer(12); 12) 5w Wasmund(19); 13) 77 Vink(2); 14) 24m Miller(6); 15) 24 Droescher(16); 16) 47 Nelson(18); 17) 11jr Riedel(9); 18) 82 Buysee(17); 19) 3 Ballenger(14). DNS: 20) Dump; 21) Danielson.
Huset's Gold Cup 2003 Brandon, SD 8_23_03
The first heat for the Lewis/DrPepper/Pepsi 360 sprints got off to a rough start as the field bumped and jumped pole sitter Doug Martens, ending up in a complete restart, where Brent Vonk put his 21v sprinter into a lead he would not relinquish as Martens gave chase. Martens held on to second until the final lap, when 17v Troy Meyer squeaked past him coming out of turn four. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Vonk(2); 2) Meyer(4); 3) Martens(1); 4) 3 Steve Ballenger(for Dusty Ballenger)(6); 5) 28 Mitch Runge(3); 6) 24m John Miller(5).
Heat two started out much like the first, with the outside front row starter taking the lead at the green, as 17b Ryan Bickett took advantage of an open track in front of him to take the lead until five laps to go, when his torque tube came out of the cockpit and ended up in turn four. Butch Hanssen inherited the lead, as Bickett was pushed into the pits, with Dusty Zomer behind him. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Hanssen(4); 2) 1 Zomer(3); 3) 47 Brad Nelson(6); 4) 57x Jake Peters(5); 5) 42w Brandon Rokusek (1); 6) 4 Cody Hansen(7). DNF: 7) Bickett(2).
The third 360 sprint heat broke the mold of the first two, with the pole sitter 11jr Joe Riedel taking off with the lead at the green with Randy Droescher giving chase. Droescher passed Riedel for the lead coming out of turn four with four to go. The Haney crew had the 69H of Terry Reilly working well as one lap later, he got by Riedel for second while 12 Brock Dump took third the following lap. Finishing order(starting position) 1) 24 Droescher(2); 2) Reilly(4); 3) Dump(3); 4) Riedel(1); 5) 77 Eric McGillivray(for Troy Vink)(5); 6) 25 Brian Baker(6); 7) 55 Dan Gooseman(for Lyle Howey III)(7).
The Interstate Auto Center Outlaws took to the track for the first heat of the 2003 edition of the Huset's Gold Cup with ten cars coming out to compete. The first start was called back when 6 Brian Brown ran over the front end of 2H Ryan Voss before exiting turn four to take the green. Voss lost his nose wing and started in his original position. The restart had 8 John Bridgeford taking command of the lead from his outside front row starting spot, with 25 Chad Radel behind him. Ricky Logan put the 17g car into third place after one lap. With four laps completed, Voss stopped coming out of turn four, bringing out the yellow and bunching up the field. When the green flew again, Radel hit a rut coming out of turn two which allowed Logan to pass him for second. One lap later, Logan passed Bridgeford for first and hung on for the win. The finish would see Brown cut down on and contacting 22 Jason Linnell coming out of turn four, with Linnell getting sideways and stopping just short of passing the flag stand. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Logan(6); 2) Bridgeford(2); 3) Radel(4); 4) 101 Chuck McGillivray(3); 5) 9m Micah Schliemann(10); 6) Brown(9); 7) 26 John Egeland(1). DNF: 8) Linnell(6); 9) 9 Wade Nygaard(8); 10) Voss(7).
The second heat became a worrisome event as 50d Derrick Beckman became airborn and spun like a frisbee into the turn one wall at the start. The force of the spin and impact had the crowd concerned when the saftey crew set up a landing area in the back field for the Sioux Valley Hospital helicopter. Beckman was removed from the car, put on a backboard and taken out to the landing area and was transported by air to Sioux Valley. It was reported later in the program that it appeared Derrick would be okay. I hope the early prognosis is correct.
On the complete restart, Colin Northway put the North 60 sprinter in the point position while 64 Brad Pake made several stabs at the second place spot held by 57x Jake Peters. This was the most entertaining part of the heat, as Pake was continuously on Peter's bumper going through the corners, with Peters pulling away running the bottom. Bob Martin tangled with the wall in turn two on the white flag lap, with the red flying after the top four had taken the checkers. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Northway(1); 2) Peters(2); 3) Pake(3); 4) 57a Eric VanderPloeg(7); 5) 33 Jim Smith(9); 6) 69 Mike Moore(8); 7) 14R Randy Rosenboom(10). DNF: 8) 10tr Martin(4); 9) 17 Dave Sobczak(5); 10) Beckman.
The third Outlaw sprint heat went GWC with 16 Gary DeWall holding onto the lead until lap 8 when he got behind a lapped car going low into turn one and 24 Terry McCarl passed him for the lead on the outside. Finishing order(starting position): 1) McCarl(3); 2) DeWall(1); 3) 13 Mark Dobmeier(2); 4) 55 Clint Garner(8); 5) 4k Lynton Jeffrey(6); 6) R19 Justin Henderson(7); 7) 1 Chris Shirek(4); 8) 71 Robert Bell(5); 9) 12L John Lambertz(9).
The long white limousine entered the track from the back stretch pit gate, taking a course through turns three and four, to come to a stop at the flagstand. The chauffeur came around the back of the limousine to open the door for the dealer to exit and prepare to deal a hand of poker to the top ten qualifiers of the Outlaw heats. Amid camera lights and flashes at the green felt table, Chad Radel drew the high hand with two kings, and thus won the right to the pole position for the 2003 edition of the Huset's Gold Cup.
The ten lap B feature took the top six to the Gold Cup main event. John Egeland seemed to have figured out the set up, as he took the lead from pole position and looked strong until two laps in when he hit the outside wall coming out of turn four, riding up on the wall and finishing with a flip and a roll, coming to a rest near the infield fence across from the flag stand. A header fire erupted on the right side of the car and was quickly extinguished by a saftey crew member who vaguely resembled the dealer of the poker game that set up the top ten starting positions in the main feature to be run later in the evening. Wade Nygaard, who was already making an exciting charge to the front, jumped right back into the saddle and quickly passed Bell and then Shirek for the lead. Nygaard built up a half track lead within three laps of the race resuming, while Jason Linnell was making moves of his own, taking second place from Shirek. With two laps left on the scoreboard, 17 Dave Sobczak spun in turn four, bringing out the yellow. Sobczak restarted on the tail and swapped passes with 12L John Lambertz, getting past him again coming out of turn four. Finishing order(starting position); 1) Nygaard(6); 2) Linnell(5); 3) Shirek(3); 4) 71 Bell(4); 5) 14R Rosenboom(2); 6) 17 Sobczak(8);/ 7) Lambertz(7). DNF: 8) 26 Egeland(1).
The 18 lap Lewis/DrPepper/Pepsi 360 sprint feature got off to a clean start, with the 51 car of Doug Martens running fine, as he took the lead at the green with fourth staring Brent Vonk moving into second place, while Terry Reilly had the 69H passing cars running the top of the track, going from 12th starting position to 7th in three laps. Martens and Vonk were into lapped traffic by the fifth circuit and Brock Dump passed Mitch Runge for third coming out of turn two with ten laps to go. Two laps later, Dusty Zomer, with his rear brake rotor glowing, came out of turn two alongside Reilly. Zomer made contact with Reilly on the back straight, with Reilly going into the wall and sustaining front end damage and coming to a stop, collecting hard charging Butch Hanssen. Both cars went to the pits with suspension and tire damage and did not return. Randy Droescher pulled in to the pits on the yellow and parked his #24 for the evening. The restart saw Eric McGillivray hit the turn two wall hard, bringing out the red before a lap could be completed. Once again, the call was made for the helicopter, but it was called off just as it arrived, making one swooping pass over the track before heading back to Sioux Falls. When the green flew once again with eight laps to go, Martens was still leading while Dump and Vonk battled for second with Dump winning this one. As the scoreboard read six laps to go, Dump passed Martens for the lead in turn three, with Peters having charged to the front, passing Martens for second going into turn one on the next lap. Vonk, not content with running in fourth, got past Martens going into turn three, only to see Martens take his spot back coming out of four. Zomer moved passed Vonk with two laps to go and the top five positions seemed to be set, until the white flag lap, when Peters passed Dump for first place high in three and four, Dump misjudged the bottom curb and gets sideways going down the front straight, losing to Peters by 20 feet. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Peters(10); 2) Dump(8); 3) Martens(1); 4) Zomer(7); 5) Vonk(4); 6) Runge(6); 7) 17v Troy Meyer(9); 8) 24m John Miller(18); 9) Riedel(3); 10) Steve Ballenger(for Dusty Ballenger)(14); 11) Baker(18); 12) 42w Brandon Rokusek(2); 13) Gooseman(for Lyle Howey III)(19); 14) Hansen(17). DNF: 15) Eric McGillivray(for Troy Vink)(13); 16) Droescher(5); 17) Hanssen(11); 18) Reilly(12); 19) Nelson(15). DNS: 20) Bickett.
The 2003 edition of the Huset's Gold Cup got under way with Terry McCarl shooting out into the lead from his outside front row starting position with Jake Peters and Chad Radel in tow. Two laps in, Jim Smith rolled his 33 car low in turn two, one of many to have problems coming out of that corner all night, bringing out the red flag. He was uninjured and the car suffered extensive wing damage and was pushed into the pits. Jason Linnell had already retired to the pits at this point The restart saw the black flag fly for a jumping Brian Brown, who was sent to the tail for his transgression. The single file restart was stopped before one lap could be completed, as a pile up occured in turn four leaving the VanderPloeg and Dobmeier cars heavily damaged. McGillivray went to the pits with his top wing/wing mounts broken, Bell ran over a right rear and came down hard, having to be towed into the pits; Moore and Logan also retired for the evening with unknown damage. When the race resumed, McCarl maintained his lead with Peters in second, Pake and then Garner passing Radel for third and fourth by the time four laps were completed. Meanwhile, Henderson was on the move from his 18th starting spot, passing Jeffrey and DeWall in turn two for sixth with six laps down. Two laps later, Pake's engine let loose going into the first turn, he flamed out and came to a stop in turn three, putting Radel back into fourth place behind Garner. With 22 laps to go it was: McCarl, Peters, Garner, Radel, Henderson, Jeffrey, DeWall, Nygaard, Northway and Brown in the top ten spots. On lap 21, Henderson passed Radel to take fourth coming out of turn two; three laps later, McCarl was into lapped traffic with Peters and Garner closing the gap. Garner charged past Peters in turn three on the fifteenth lap, only to see Peters get back past Garner coming out of turn two on the next circuit. With nine laps left in the race, Radel's rearend goes out smoking and he pulls in at the back stretch pit enterance. The action on the track was still intense, as it took McCarl four laps to get past the soon to be lapped cars of Schliemann and DeWall, giving Peters the opportunity to close the distance between him and McCarl. With two laps to go, Peters attempts a move on the lapped car of Bridgeford going into turn three, makes contact with him and spins, bringing out the yellow and a trip to the tail for Peters., putting him in thirteenth place for the start of the green-white-checkers dash. The night wasn't over for Peters, as he charged past five cars to finish 8th, while McCarl again pulled away from the field for his first Gold Cup win. Finishing order(starting position): 1) McCarl(2); 2) Garner(6); 3) Henderson(18); 4) Jeffrey(16); 5) Nygaard(19); 6) Schliemann(12); 7) Brown(15); 8) Peters(4); 9) DeWall(3); 10) Northway(10); 11) Sobczak(24); 12) Bridgeford(8); 13) Shirek(21); 14) Rosenboom(23). The Modern Woodmen of America sponsored tonights races at Huset's Speedway with discount ticket deals and a great crowd was on hand despite the heat and humidity present while the sun was still in the sky. The Lewis/Pepsi/DrPepper 360 sprints got off to a fast start with front row starter Joe Riedel taking the lead at the green with Mitch Runge in tow in the first heat. While Riedel and Runge were putting the distance between themselves and the rest of the pack, 17v Troy Meyer and 69H Terry Reilly were working their way to the front, Reilly passing Runge for third with two laps to go. Meyer, who was running second by now, passed Riedel coming out of turn four heading for the checkers. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Troy Meyer(6); 2) 11jr Riedel(2); 3) Reilly(5); 4) 28 Runge(4); 5) 51 Doug Martens(7); 6) 42w Brandon Rokusek(1); 7) 77 Troy Vink(3).
In the second 360 heat, 12 Brock Dump checked out on the field and lead the distance, with 1d Terry Karn running second. I don't know what the deal was, but many drivers were having problems reading the track, seeming to bounce out of turn two and losing momentum, and this resulted in not too many passes being made. Dump seemed to have it working right, as he held on to the lead to take the checkers. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Dump(2); 2) Karn(1); 3) 8K Butch Hanssen(4); 4) 9 Micah Schliemann(6); 5) 1 Dusty Zomer(5); 6) 21v Brent Vonk(3); 7) 4 Cody Hansen(7).
Randy Droescher took advantage of an open track and years of experience to shoot out to a straightaway lead in the third 360 heat, only having a couple of fishtails coming out of turn two, while 17B Ryan Bickett used the open track before him to run his own groove and finish in second place. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Droescher(2); 2) Bickett(3); 3) 3 Dusty Ballenger(5); 4) 35 Eric McGillivray(1); 5) 55 Lyle Howey III(4); 6) 33 Jim Smith(6); 7) 82 Brandon Buysse(7).
Seventeen sprints showed up to compete in the Interstate Auto Center Outlaw sprint class, with nine and eight car heats having been run. Chuck McGillivray proves again, that old age and treachery overcomes youth and skill by taking the lead in the first heat from his outside front row starting position, while pole sitter 33 Jim Smith held onto second place throughout the race, seeing some side by side action with 11x Gregg Bakker with seven laps to go, when 2D Dusty Ballenger retired to the pits. The battle between Smith and Bakker was the most entertaining part of this heat, as 55 Clint Garner got into it with them, too. Finishing order: 1) McGillivray(2); 2) Smith(1); 3) Bakker(4); 4) Garner(6); 5) 12L Johnn Cressman(provisional for Lambertz)(8); 6) 16 Gary DeWall(5); 7) 2H Ryan Voss(7); 8) 26 John Egeland(9). DNF: 9) Ballenger(3).
The second Outlaw sprint heat got off to a rough start, when 9s Micah Schliemann bounced off the turn two wall at the drop of the green. He coasted to a stop on teh back straight and went to the pits. The restart saw 9 Wade Nygaard take the lead, with 0 Dennis Moore, Jr in second, which soon turned into a battle between them and R19 Justin Henderson, with Henderson passing Nygaard for second place going into turn three with seven laps down. Terry McCarl passed Nygaard for third late in the race. Finishing order: 1) Dennis Moore, Jr(3); 2) Henderson(5); 3) McCarl(6); 4) Nygaard(2); 5) 64 Brad Pake(7); 6) 14R Randy Rosenboom(1); 7) 2K Jimmy Kouba(8). DNF: 8) Schliemann(4).
With over twenty one 360 sprints in the pits, a B Main was run. Brent Vonk had his #21v ready and took the green and put a straightaway lead on the pack on his way to a win. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Vonk(2); 2) Rokusek(1); 3) Smith(3); 4) 77 Troy Vink(4); 5) Hansen(5); 6) Buysee(6).
Eighteen 360 sprints started the Lewis/Pepsi/DrPepper A Main, with pole sitter Doug Martens bringing out the yellow and a complete restart, when his engine went sour at the green, coming to a stop at the top of turn two and riding the hook into the pits, done for the night, allowing Eric McGillivary to move up a row and take the early lead running the bottom. Before the field could complete the first lap, Dusty Zomer flipped and rolled down the embankment of turn four. Zomer's car went to the repair area in the pits, with the R19 team lending him a wing and many idle 410 team crew members working to get Zomer back on the track to tag the tail on the second complete restart. When the green flew once again, 1D Terry Karn got the jump and lead the field to the next yellow for Ryan Bickett, who bumped the turn three wall and spun hard, retiring for the night, at this point, the top eight were Karn, McGillivray, Hanssen, Dump, Reilly, Ballenger, Schliemann and Droescher. The race resumed with fourteen laps to go with Karn again getting a good start out of turn four to keep the lead, with Hanssen moving past McGillivray for second and onto Karn's rear nerf bar until lap 9, when Hanssen passed Karn for the lead in turn one. A lap later, McGillivray stoped in turn two bringing out the yellow. When action returned, Schliemann and Karn exchanged passes, with Karn getting back past Schliemann in turn three, only to see Schliemann take second place for good coming out of turn four. Reilly, who had been hot and cold since the first yellow, went low to pass Karn for fourth coming out of turn two with four laps left on the scoreboard. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Hanssen(9); 2) Schliemann(15); 3) Dump(5); 4) Reilly(11); 5) Karn(2); 6) Runge(8); 7) Ballenger(13); 8) Zomer(12); 9) Droescher(6); 10) Meyer(14); 11) Vonk(16); 12) Howey III(10); 13) Smith(18); 14) McGillivray(3); 15) Rokusek(17). DNF: 16) Riedel(4); 17) Bickett(7); 18) Martens(1).
Passing was tough in the Outlaw main if you didn't get a break or daylight to drive through in the first lap or two, as 42w Ryan Voss lead the first two laps with Jim Smith in second, when Dennis Moore, Jr moved up from his sixth starting spot to take the lead coming out of turn four. On lap 8 Johnn Cressman tangled with the wall in turn three, getting his sprinter hung in the middle of the curve, upside down on the wall and hanging by the left wheels. Amazingly, the only thing damaged besides the wings, were the wing mounts on the Cressman car, which rode the hook into the pits after being lifted down from its precarious postion by the saftey crew and volunteers who came out to give assistance. With seventeen laps to go, the order was: Moore, Jr, Nygaard, Voss, McCarl, Chuck McGillivray, Bakker, Smith and DeWall in the top eight. In two laps, McCarl passed a bottom running Moore, Jr coming out of turn four and assuming the lead, with McCarl reaching lapped traffic five laps later, when Bakker spun going into turn three bringing out the yellow. Bakker retired to the pits with front end damage. Garner stopped the 55 car on the front stretch, going to the pits to have his car checked out and returning to tag the tail. With ten laps to go, the order was: McCarl, Moore, Jr, Nygaard, McGillivray, Dewall, Voss, Pake and Henderson in the top eight. The last restart saw McCarl and Moore, Jr go to the rim, but little passing ensued, with the order only changing with Pake's pass of Voss before the checkered flags flew. Finishing order(starting position): 1) McCarl(10); 2) Moore, Jr(6); 3) Nygaard(5); 4) McGillivray(4); 5) DeWall(8); 6) 64 Brad Pake(11); 7) Voss(2); 8) Henderson(9); 9) Garner(12); 10) Smith(1); 11) Ballenger(16); 12) Rosenboom(30; 13) Egeland(14); 14) Kouba(15); 15) Bakker(7). DNF: 16) Cressman(provisional for Lambertz)(13). DNS: Schliemann.
Huset's Speedway Brandon, SD 8_10_03
The open wheelers at Huset's got off to a fast start with the Lewis/Pepsi/DrPepper 360 sprints when Brock Dump put his #12 car out in front from his outside front row position. Micah Schliemann moved past 17B Ryan Bickett for second place on lap two. Schliemann continued his charge to the front, closing in on Dump and passing him out of turn two with three laps to go, when Dump spun at the bottom of turn four, bringing out the yellow and putting Dump on the tail for the dash to the checkers. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 9 Micah Schliemann(4); 2) 17B Ryan Bickett(1); 3) 17v Troy Meyer(5); 4) 28 Mitch Runge(3); 5) 12 Brock Dump(2); 6) 42w Brandon Rukesek(6).
The second 360 heat saw 11jr Joe Riedel take off from his front row starting spot and lead the race from green to checkers, winning by a straightaway. This heat really had the cars spread out and passing was tough. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 11jr Joe Riedel(2); 2) 3 Dusty Ballenger(4); 3) 55 Lyle Howey III(3); 4) 24 Randy Droescher(5); 5) 77 Troy Vink(1); 6) 35 Eric McGillivray(6); 7) xXx Ricky Sammons, Jr.(7).
Heat three had Terry Reilly in the 69H car taking off for the rim at the green from his outside front row starting spot and never looking back. 8k Butch Hanssen was quick to follow, but could not get more than two car lengths within Reilly. Zomer passed Vonk for third two laps from the end. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 69H Terry Reilly(2); 2) 8k Butch Hanssen(3); 3) 1 Dusty Zomer(5); 4) 21v Brent Vonk(1); 5) 99 Shawn VanWyhe(4); 6) 1D Terry Karn(6).
The 410's took to the track in the first heat, and 101 Chuck McGillvary followed the trend, jumping out to first place from his outside front row starting spot, a position he held for three laps before pulling in to the pits, handing the lead to 16 Gary DeWall, who held on to the lead while Lambertz, Radel and Schliemann jockeyed for third place behind 0m Dennis Moore, Jr, who came from seventh to second by the time the checkers flew. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 16 Gary DeWall(3); 2) 0m Dennis Moore, Jr(7); 3) 12L John Lambertz(4); 4) 9s Micah Schliemann(6); 5) 25 Chad Radel(5); 6) 14R Randy Rosenboom(1); 7) 24 Troy Little (provisional for McCarl)(8); 8) 10 Bob Martin(9); DNF: 9) 101 Chuck McGillivray(2).
The second 410 heat once again proved that the outside front row was the place to be, as 11x Gregg Bakker took the lead at the green with a hard charging Colin Northway working his way to Bakkers tail. With two laps down, Jeffrey pulled in to the pits; Northway finally passed Bakker out of turn two with five laps to go. Skip Jackson, in the black 21 sprinter passed Nygaard for third on the next lap. Finishing order(starting position): 1) 60 Colin Northway(3); 2) 11x Gregg Bakker(2); 3) 21 Skip Jackson(8); 4) 55 Clint Garner(60); 5) 9 Wade Nygaard(1); 6) 2D Dusty Ballenger(4); 7) R19 Johnn Cressman(provisional for Henderson)(7); 8) 33 Bill Smith(9); DNF: 9) 4k Lynton Jeffrey(5).
Ryan Bickett broke the trend, jumping out to first place from pole position with Brock Dump on his tail, until five laps in, when Terry Reilly passed Bickett with a slider coming out of turn four. The yellow flew on the next lap when Zomer spun in turn four, bunching up the field. The restart saw Reilly take the 69H car to the top and pull away from the pack and was into lapped traffic with 11 to go with Schliemann and Hanssen able to close the gap between them and Reilly, chasing him through lapped traffic. Reilly had a solid lead going into turn three for the white flag lap, when his engine started smoking and that was all the break Schliemann needed to pass Reilly in turn one on the last lap. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Schliemann(9); 2) Reilly(6); 3) Hanssen(8); 4) Dump(4); 5) Bickett(1); 6) Ballenger(10); 7) 77 Troy Vink(2); 8) Vonk(3); 9) Runge(12); 10) Howey III(7); 11) Zomer(14); 12) 17v Troy Meyer(15); 13) Riedel(5); 14) 24 Randy Droescher(13); 15) 1D Terry Karn(18); 16) VanWyhe(11); 17) 35 Eric McGillivray(17); 18) xXx Ricky Sammons, Jr (19); 19) Rokusek(16); DNS: 20) Doug Martens.
The grande finale of the night, the 410 Outlaw sprints had outside front row starter Dennis Moore, Jr jumping out to take the lead at the green from his outside front row spot, with Gregg Bakker in tow. After a yellow for a spin out in turn one after three laps, the field set up to go green once again, which was called back when Lynton Jeffrey jumped coming out of turn three, passing five cars before the line and was sent to the tail. This seemed to set an example, as later restarts had similar occurances, coming out of turn four three wide at the green. When racing resumed, pandemonium seemed to break out in turn four as you could have tossed a family sized tent over the top eight cars in the order, luckily no contact was made between cars. Once the race got off to a satisfactory start, the top was the place to be running and Schliemann hit the wall in turn one hard with 17 laps to go bringing out the red flag. Then 12L John Lambertz got loose going into turn three and put his car over the wall, into the fence and right in the middle of the Bud Light sign as the scoreboard was showing 16 laps left. He was ok, but the car was taken to the pits on the hook. Moore, Jr once again took the lead at the restart, and with 13 to go Northway passed Bakker for second, but Bakker would return the favor on lap 20 to retake second place behind Moore, Jr and hold it to the finish. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Dennis Moore, Jr(2); 2) Bakker(4); 3) Northway(6); 4) Jeffrey(16); 5) 55 Clint Garner(11); 6) DeWall(5); 7) 21 Skip Jackson(14); 8) Nygaard(3); 9) Cressmann(provisional for Henderson)(12); 10) 25 Chad Radel(9); 11) Chuck McGillivray(17); 12) Troy Little(provisional for McCarl)(14); 13) Ballenger(8); 14) Rosenboom(1). DNF: 15) Bob Martin(15); 16) John Lambertz(7); 17) Schliemann(10); 18) 33 Bill Smith(18).
Huset's Speedway Brandon, SD 8_3_03
The place was packed Sunday night at Huset's Speedway for the Jay Egge Memorial twin features for sprint cars. The twenty four 410 Outlaw sprints jumped out for their heats following the stock car heats, which was a pleasant surprise. The 410's had the dirt flying, so my notes are a bit spotty, sorry if I missed some details in the heats.
The first heat saw 57x Jake Peters and 25 Chad Radel move to the front at the green, when after two laps, 9n Wade Nygaard's engine went up in smoke going into turn three, and 60 Colin Northway had now where to go to avoid the slowing Nygaard and the cars made contact, with Northway getting into the wall between three and four, as Nygaard coasted to the front straight and into the pits. He was done for the night. Northway had extensive damage to his wing and front end and would return for the features later. The restart had Peters and Radel taking off with a hard charging Terry McCarl coming to pass Radel, and then Peters for first place and the heat win. Finishing order(starting position): 1)McCarl(6?); 2)Peters(2); 3)Radel(4); 14R Randy Rosenboom(1); 5)101 Chuck McGillivray(3). DNF: 6) Nygaard(5?); 7) Northway(7?). DNS: 8) 38 Miles Grein.
John Lambertz in his 12L car took the lead at the green in the second heat and never looked back as 11x Gregg Bakker, 4k Lynton Jefffrey and 9m Micah Schliemann duked it out for second and third. Finishing order(starting position): 1)Lambertz(2); 2) Jeffrey(4); 3) Bakker(3); 4) Schliemann(6); 5) 0m Dennis Moore, Jr(7); 6) 13 Mark Dobmeier(5); 7) 56 Johnn Cressman(8); 8) 33 Jim Smith(1).
The third heat line up had 55 Clint Garner on the pole, and he took full advantage of it, while 16 Gary DeWall and R19 Justin Henderson got by 2D Dusty Ballenger to finish in the top three. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Garner(1); 2) DeWall(3); 3) Henderson(4); 4) Ballenger(2); 5) 20au Troy Little(8); 6) 2 Ryan Voss(5); 7) 1 Chris Shirek(6); 8) 0 Jeff Davis(7).
In the first 360 A feature 21v Brent Vonk used his pole position to lead the pack, when four laps in, 99 Shawn VanWyhe got loose at the top of three and four, collecting 69H Terry Reilly, who does an easy over and roll. Reilly went to the pits on the hook, VanWyhe returned after going pitside to have things checked out on his car and tags the tail. Vonk held onto first place until past the half way mark when 57x Jake Peters passed him to take first. 8k Butch Hanssen was on the move when what appears to have been a broken fuel line/header fire literally had him in the hot seat, stopping on the inside front stretch to have the flames put out. Peters led with Vonk in second, until seven laps left, when 3 Dusty Ballenger passed Vonk. Brock Dump pulled to a stop at the top of turn three, bringing out another yellow, allowing 9 Micah Schliemann to get back to the front, after having tagged the tail for going into the pits for repairs/adjustments on the lap four caution. Peters car coasted to a stop on the front stretch while leading, bringing out the caution flag once again with two laps to go on the scoreboard, handing the lead to Ballenger and a green-white-checker situation. Ballenger took control of the point, until the last lap when Schliemann passed him in turn three for the win. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Schliemann(14); 2) Ballenger(7); 3) Vonk(1); 4) 55 Lyle Howey III(3); 5) 1 Dusty Zomer(11); 6) 28 Mitch Runge(9); 7) VanWyhe(6); 8) 11 Joe Riedel(2); 9) 33 Jim Smith(16); 10) 77 Troy Vink(15); 11) 17b Ryan Bickett(17); 12) 24 Randy Droescher(5); 13) 51 Doug Martens(13). DNF: 14) Peters(8); 15) Dump(4); 16) Hanssen(10); 17) Reilly(12).
The 410 Outlaws' lined up for their first A feature with 2 Ryan Voss on the pole for when the green flag dropped. 57x Jake Peters, who had two cars in the pits, went high into turn one from his fourth starting spot to take the lead, which was called back when 13 Mark Dobmeier and 56 Johnn Cressman made contact on the back stretch, with Cressman spinning into the wall and damaging his car. A complete restart was deemed necessary, with Peters once again taking the lead coming out of turn two and was into lapped traffic with seven laps tallied on the scoreboard with 55 Clint Garner in tow. Garner passed Peters for first in lapped traffic before 16 laps were tallied, when 0m Dennis Moore, Jr's engine started smoking and brought out the yellow flag with nine to go. The last nine laps saw passes by McCarl(1), DeWall(1) and Henderson(2) to move past 11x Gregg Bakker to rearrange to top 7 positions, while Jeffrey passed five to take eighth. Garner held on to his lead to take the checkers. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Garner(3); 2) Peters(4); 3) 9m Micah Schliemann(7); 4) McCarl(14); 5)DeWall(10); 6)Henderson(13); 7) Bakker(9); 8) 4k Lynton Jeffrey(12); 9) 12L John Lambertz(5); 10) Dobmeier(15); 11) 20au Troy Little(17); 12) 60 Colin Northway(22); 13) 101 Chuck McGillivray(8); 14) 25 Chad Radel(11); 15) 2D Dusty Ballenger(6); 16) 1 Chris Shirek(19); 17) 2 Ryan Voss(1); 18) 14R Randy Rosenboom(2).DNF: 19) 33 Jim Smith(20); 20) 0m Moore, Jr(16); 21) 0 Jeff Davis(21); 22) Cressman(18). DNS: 23) 9 Wade Nygaard; 24) Miles Grein.
The second 360 feature got off to a fast start, with 1 Dusty Zomer moving into second place in the first two laps from his seventh starting spot, passing pole sitter 24 Randy Droescher coming out of turn two with four laps down. Schliemann moved up to third, passing Lyle Howey III after eight laps. Schliemann started ninth despite having won the first 360 feature due to the DNF's in the first feature by Dump, Hanssen and Reilly who made repairs and started on the tail. Vonk and Riedel seemed to be nursing sick engines, as they only put in one or two slow laps each, before pulling into the pits, having given up their slated postions. With 12 laps completed, Schliemann got loose in turn two, bumping wheels with Droescher, both doing 360's and kept going, Droescher holding his position as the yellow was tossed. Schliemann went to the work area/pits and restarted in the rear. During all this action, Terry Reilly, the "Watertown Wizard", had moved up to sixth despite a bent up top wing. When the racing resumed, Reilly went for the rim and passed Vink, Runge and then Howey to set the 69H in second place with four laps left in the race with a pass of Droescher coming out of turn two. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Zomer(7); 2) Reilly(11); 3) Droescher(1); 4) 8k Butch Hanssen(12); 5) Schliemann(9); 6) Howey III(6); 7) 99 Shawn VanWyhe(5); 8) 28 Mitch Runge(4); 9) 3 Dusty Ballenger(8); 10) 77 Troy Vink(2); 11) 12 Brock Dump(10); 12) 17b Ryan Bickett(14); 13) 33 Jim Smith(3). DNF: 14) Riedel(13); 15) Vonk(15).
In the final race of the evening, Dusty Ballenger took the lead coming out of turn two on the green flag lap from his outside second row starting spot. With five laps in, Gary DeWall hit the first corner wall after making contact with another racer, bringing out the yellow with Ballenger being followed by Radel, Dobmeier, McCarl and Jeffrey. Schliemann went to the work area/pits and returns in time to tag the tail on the restart. Two laps later, Jeffrey passed Radel for second working the bottom. One lap later, Smith comes to a stop on the back straight, bringing out another yellow and bunching up the field once again. Two laps after the race got underway again, McCarl had passed Dobmeier and then Radel with a slidejob in turn four; Jeffrey took first from Ballenger as bottom came in for the 4k car and when the red flag flew for Chris Shirek hitting the wall in the first corner, McCarl had placed himself in second place behind Jeffrey. The top five with ten to go were: Jeffrey, McCarl, Ballenger, Dobmeier and Radel, with Jake Peters wanting in on it. The next eight laps were fast and furious with the front runners getting into lapped traffic quickly, Dennis Moore, Jr had passed Radel to get into the top five, when with two laps to go, he did a 360 coming out of turn two, causing Radel to brake to avoid hitting him and letting Peters get by. One lap later, the same fate befell Mark Dobmeier coming out of turn two, doing a 360 and losing his top five position. Jeffrey held on running the bottom to get his second win of the season at Huset's. Finishing order(starting position): 1) Jeffrey(11); 2) McCarl(15); 3) Ballenger(4); 4) Peters(17); 5) Radel(5); 6) Garner(18); 7) Schliemann(16); 8) Henderson(13); 9) Moore, Jr(21); 10) Dobmeier(9); 11) 20au Troy Little(8); 12) Northway(7); 13) McGillivray(6); 14) Voss(2); 15) Rosenboom(1). DNF: 16) Smith(19); 17) Davis(20); 18) Lambertz(10); 19) Shirek(3); 20) DeWall(14); 21) Bakker(12).

The first Interstate Auto Center Outlaw Sprints 410 heat got off to a fast start, with 33 Jim Smith pulling away from his pole position to take the lead, with 12L John Lambertz hot on his tail. Close racing for the lead ensued with Lambertz near ly passing Smith several times coming out of turn four, until the white flag lap, when 1 Chris Shirek made contact with K9 Greg Nikitenko going into turn one, with the K9 car going into the wall hard and rolling. Smith and Lambertz came into turn one full barrel, neither able to get on the brakes hard enough in time to avoid hitting Nikitenko, which also ended up snagging 55 Clint Garner and damaging his front end. With the top three cars headed for the pits, 24 Terry McCarl inherited the lead with Dobmeier in second. Finishing Order (starting position): 24 Terry McCarl(7), 13 Mark Dobmeier(5), 101 Chuck McGillivray(2), 9s Micah Schliemann(4), 12L John Lambertz(3), 1 Chris Shirek(8). DNF: 55 Clint Garner(6), 33 Jim Smith(1), K9 Greg Nikitenko(9).
Heat Two for the 410's saw 11x Gregg Bakker take of with the lead from outside front row, while R19 Justin Henderson charged to second after four laps were in and set his sites on the leader. Six laps in, 6 Roger Rager in the Donahue Harley-Davidson sprinter dropped out with a dropped cylinder. Bakker kept the lead to the checkers. Finishing Order(starting position): 11x Bakker(2), R19 Henderson(6), 4k Lynton Jeffrey(3), 16 Gary DeWall(5), 60 Colin Northway(8), 2D Dusty Ballenger(4), 9 Wade Nygaard(7), 14R Randy Rosenboom(1). DNF: 6 Rager.
Please forgive me, I didn't pull out the notepad until the 410 heats were getting ready, so I do not have the heat by heat results for the 360 sprinters.
The Lewis/Pepsi/Dr Pepper 360 Sprint feature had pole sitter 12 Brock Dump take off with the lead at the green, but it took 69H Terry Reilly two laps to run down Dump and pass him for the lead, as the "Watertown Wizard" had his magic working coming out of turn two to put a straightaway lead on Dump with 11 laps to go as he entered lapped traffic. Reilly had little trouble making passes, at times, splitting two cars down the backstraight and showing no fear of running three wide. Finishing Order(starting position): 69H Reilly(2), 12 Dump(1), 24m John Miller(3), 28 Mitch Runge(4), 8k Butch Hanssen(15), 21v Brent Vonk(5), 1 Dusty Zomer(14), 17B Ryan Bickett(7), 11 Joe Riedel(6), 17v Troy Meyer(11), 55 Lyle Howey III (10), 3 Dusty Ballenger(13), 51 Doug Martens(8), 99 Shawn VanWyhe(12), 24 Randy Droescher(9), 35 Eric McGillivray(17), 77 Troy Vink(16).
The Outlaw 410 A-Main got off to a fast start, with 14 Randy Rosenboom taking the lead for the first three laps until Micah Schliemann put the 9s in the lead, only to have Lynton Jeffrey take the point one lap later. The yellow flag flew with 7 laps in for Jim Smith in his extensively repaired 33 car, who spun in turn two. The top eight at this point were Jeffrey, Schliemann, Northway, Rosenboom, McGillivray, Henderson, Dobmeier and Shirek. When the green flew again, Henderson had the R19 in third place with 14 to go in the 25 lap feature, moving into first by passing Jeffrey coming out of turn four with fifteen laps down. Five laps later, the yellow flew, with Henderson leading McCarl by nearly half a track. When the green flew once again, Henderson kept the lead, out dragging McCarl on the front stretch and leading coming out of turn two. Going into turn three, McCarl attempted to go below Henderson into the corner, Henderson holding his line going in, and McCarl ran over Henderson's left rear and coming down hard, and McCarl pulling over into turn three on the next lap, bringing out the yellow again. McCarl went to the pits, repaired the damaged front end piece in two laps of the pace car and returned to the tail. When the race resumed, Mark Dobmeier decided he wantd a say so in tonights event, and made two passes in two laps to put him in second place and locked down on the rim to chase Henderson. With three to go, the yellow flew when Dobmeier got a little squirrelly on the front stretch and nicked the wall under the flagstand, sending sparks flying, and a seeming automatic reaction from the flagman as the yellow flew right after th sparks. Was that the reason for the yellow? Or was it Colin Northway's neck collar laying on the track? With three laps to go left on the scoreboard, the to p five were Henderson, Dobmeier, Jeffrey, Schliemann and Northway. Henderson again kept his lead spot, riding the rim and taking the checkers by a half a straightaway. Finishing Order(starting position): R19 Henderson(12), 13 Dobmeier(10), 4k Jeffrey(7), 60 Northway(3), 16 DeWall(11), 9s Schliemann(6), 24 McCarl(13), 101 Chuck McGillivray(4), 12L Lambertz(8), 2D Dusty Ballenger(9) , 9 Wade Nygaard(14), 14R Rosenboom(2), 1 Chris Shirek (1), 33 Smith(17). DNF: 11x Bakker(5), 6 Roger Rager (15), 55 Clint Garner(16). DNS: K9 Greg Nikitenko.
